What is Northesat Air Alliance?



The Northeast Air Alliance was formed in April, 1998 in an effort to improve coordination of prescribed burning as well as improve public education of burning in regards to potential smoke impacts around Northeastern California. The group is made up of representatives from state, federal, private, and county land managers as well as County air Pollution Control Officers in Northeastern California.

 


 


Mission Statement

The mission of the Northeast Air Alliance Group is to improve air quality management, public education, and land manager coordination in implementing fire as a tool in land management activities.

Objectives



  • Build communication networks.

  • Provide education and awareness of respective needs of land managers and air quality regulators.

  • Facilitate a process for the NE Air Alliance to submit comments to new and changing air quality regulations and other applicable environmental regulations.

  • Identify any conflicts and recommend compromises.

  • Identify any needed changes in law and identify possible solutions.

  • Find and develop new tools, and utilize best available science to help accomplish prescribed burn and air quality goals.

  • Develop strategies to provide public education.

  • Share resources between the NE Air Alliance Group (i.e. meteorologists, equipment, and personnel)

Structure


The group is structured as an open forum. The members are responsible for fire, land, and air management and include, but are not limited to:

  • Air Pollution Control Districts

  • California Air Resources Board

  • California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection

  • U. S. Forest Service (USDA)

  • National Park Service (USDI)

  • Bureau of Land Management (USDI)

  • Private Landowners

Meeting Management


Meetings will be held three times per year in January, April, and September or as needed. Agencies will rotate the responsibility for hosting and facilitating the meetings. The agency hosting will set up the meeting and send announcements (agenda, meeting room location, etc.).

The U.S. Forest Service will update and maintain the Northeast Air Alliance mailing list.

 


Subcommittees


Subcommittees will be created if the membership identifies the need.
